Year 2 Training Programme

Employment and Leave

The STRs are all employed by University Hospitals of Bristol Trust. Their salary, travel, and on call costs are re-charged from UHBT to the trust at which the STR is working. The re-location budget is held by UHBT.  The STRs rotate to a new hospital attachment every 6 months throughout their 5 years of training.

All leave has to be approved by the Tutors at the hospital at which the STR is working.

Study leave requests must be approved at the the trust at which the STR is working, and then forwarded to   at the Severn Deanery for approval by the Head of School.  The claim for expenses is processed by the Deanery, who hold the study leave budget for all the STRs, after the leave has been taken.

Induction

Year 2 is spent in the Hospitals of NBT and UHBT, the same as year one. Further induction may not be needed.

Teaching

There is a 10 month lecture programme with relatively didactic teaching, covering all the 6 modules of FRCR II. The teaching is aimed at covering the FRCR II A syllabus.

The e-LfH R-ITI on line learning has 800 modules which also cover the entire FRCR II A syllabus. This should be used to back up the teaching programme, and fill in any gaps. E-learning is not to everyone’s taste, but is highly effective if it is.

Exams

The 6 modules of FRCR II A can be taken as soon as FRCR I has been passed, from one to all 6 modules at a time. Some modules should be attempted in the Autumn and Spring exam sessions during year 2.  It is anticipated that most STRs will have passed at least 3 modules by the end of year 2.

Rotations

The StRs spend 6 months at either UHBT or North Bristol Trust (Southmead and Frenchay hospitals), and then swop over for the second 6 months. They rotate 3 monthly through the modules, doing Neurology while at Frenchay/NBT and Paediatrics at UHBT. By the year end each StR should have covered most aspects of all 6 modules in their Year 1 and Year 2 attachments.

Chest (Cardiac and Lung)
Genito-Urinary
Gastro-Intestinal
Musculo-Skeletal
Paediatrics (Bristol Children's Hospital)
Neurology (Frenchay Hospital)

Targets for the Year

There are strict targets which must be achieved if an STR is to pass seamlessly through their ARCP (Annual Review of Competence Progression) into the next year. Each year's targets are detailed in their web pages.

Work Based Assessments

The Royal College of Radiologists is presently trialling a full programme of Work Based Assessments. These will have to be approved by PMETB before they are put into general practice. They are likely to be in place for August 2010.

On Call

Second year STRs do not do on call duties at the start of the year, but may join the rota as the year progresses, and if they have passed the internal Emergency Radiology assessment at the end of Year 1. They will definitely join the on call rotations at the start of their third year.
