The Taunton & Somerset NHS Trust offers a full range of clinical services, apart from thoracic and neuro-surgery, plastic surgery and specialist renal services. The latter are all provided at neighbouring hospitals in Exeter or Bristol. The hospital is staffed by over 100 consultants, with appropriate junior staff and clinical support. There is a suite of 5 general/gynaecology/maxillo-facial/urology theatres, 3 orthopaedic theatres, 2 ophthalmic theatres and a maternity theatre. There is a busy day surgery unit. The A&E, orthopaedic, endoscopy and ophthalmology departments are housed in the Queens Building, opened in 1987. Medical and out-patient services and the main x-ray department are in the Duchess Building, opened in 1995). There is a redevelopment plan to replace the current surgical facilities, provide a cancer centre with 2 linear accelerators and a cardiac surgical centre. In support of clinical services, the radiology department offers a full range of modern imaging facilities, including Philips 1.5 Tesla MRI, Toshiba 16-slice CT and a new gamma camera. It is staffed by 9 radiologists (8.6 w.t.e) with a range of specialist interests. There is a breast unit on site providing breast screening services to Somerset. Two SpRs (2nd and 4th year) rotate to the department from the Bristol Training Scheme. There is a post graduate medical centre on site with library and conference facilities. There are plans for redevelopment of this in conjunction with development of a Somerset Academy.

The College Tutor is D Cooke - The Consultant Radiologists include:-

  • Dr Peter M Cavanagh -Dr Cavanagh is the Medical Director of the Trust and his specialist radiological interest is MRI.

  • Dr Jon M Bell - Dr Bell is Clinical Lead and his specialist interest is orthopaedic Radiology.

  • Dr Hywel G Thomas - Specialist interest is all elements of interventional radiology and has been assisting with the setting up of the PACS system.

  • Dr Simon K Wells -Specialist interest is ultrasound with a particular reference to anomaly scanning.

  • Dr David I Cooke - Specialist interest is paediatrics and nuclear medicine. Dr Cooke is also recognised by the GMC as a Specialist in Nuclear Medicine.

  • Dr Jon D Hunter - Specialist interest is sectional imaging, particularly ultrasound.

  • Dr Richard D Keogan - Specialist interest interventional radiology.

  • Dr Sarah A Willson - Specialist interest breast imaging.

  • Dr Paul R Burn - Specialist interests sectional imaging with particular reference to CT and MRI.

  • Dr Tim P Ward - Specialist interest interventional radiology.

  • Dr Danial Fox - Specialist interest sectional imaging with particular reference to CT and MRI

    Year 4/5 Training Rotations Available at Musgrove Park Hospital (Taunton)

     

    General Radiology

    Taunton offers a very popular 6 month rotation in general radiology for a 4th year SpR.  It is intended that this rotation expands the experience in general radiology, but following discussion with the tutor (Dr David Cooke) the registrar may be able to pursue for one or two sessions per week doing a specific sub-specialty interest.

     

    Radionuclide Radiology

    Registrars who have chosen to pursue a one year course in radionuclide radiology or the two year course in nuclear medicine (please see Bath Rotation) may rotate to Taunton for additional experience
