North Bristol NHS Trust

Southmead Hospital is a large district general hospital lying just to the North of the centre of Bristol and is the largest of a group of hospitals that together form North Bristol NHS Trust. The other major hospital which also is part of the trust is Frenchay Hospital. Together the Radiology departments at Frenchay and Southmead plus those at the smaller associated hospitals provide a comprehensive imaging service to the population of North Bristol and to patients who come to the trust for specialist services from outside the city. The radiology departments perform 200, 000 examinations per year and there are 23 consultant radiologists all with sub-specialty interests. Southmead Hospital has the status of a full teaching hospital and is fully involved in undergraduate medical student teaching.

The radiology department at Southmead has a multi-slice helical CT scanner, modern MRI scanner, 2 nuclear medicine cameras, 3 ultrasound machines and 3 digital fluoroscopy rooms. Most of the vascular radiology at the trust is performed at Southmead Hospital with 4 of the consultants having a special interest in vascular interventional radiology. The department supports large urology and renal medicine departments and provides the full range of diagnostic and interventional uro-radiology to support renal transplantation, major uro-oncology procedures and live renal donation. The major orthopaedic units are also split between Frenchay and Southmead hospitals. The major emergency admissions are taken to Frenchay where the regional neurosurgical unit is located. All general medical and surgical specialties are represented.

The Southmead radiology department consultants are:

MJ Thornton vascular intervention, uro-radiology
EJ Loveday vascular intervention and GI imaging
AE Mitchelmore uro-radiology and nuclear medicine
SJ Armstrong MRI, ENT and head and neck imaging
M Darby MRI, Chest radiology and nuclear medicine
JM Haworth paediatric radiology and US
M Williams musculo-skeletal imaging
M Bradley musculo-skeletal imaging
P McCoubrie MRI, US and oncology imaging
L Jones breast and vascular imaging

The tutors at Southmead are Dr Paul McCoubrie, Dr Mike Darby and Dr Mark Thornton.

Year 4/5 Training Rotations Available at NBT (Southmead Hospital)

General Radiology.

All aspects of general radiology are available at Southmead Hospital

Musculo-Skeletal Radiology.

All aspects of musculo-Skeletal imaging are available within the trust and under certain circumstances this may be a split attachment between Frenchay Hospital and Southmead Hospital. Interventional musculo-skeletal radiology is available along with MRI, CT, ultrasound and plain radiography.

Non-vascular interventional radiology.

Southmead Hospital is the biggest renal/urological unit in the country and there are large numbers of interventional procedures available on a daily basis. In addition, there are large numbers of examinations on post operative urology patients which would lead to an individual SPR being trained to have a sub specialty interest in uroradiology. Interventional gastro-intestinal radiology is also available with PTC and biliary stent work along with significant numbers of esophageal stents and biopsy and abscess drainage work.

Vascular interventional radiology.

Approximately 30 renal artery stents are performed annually at this hospital along with a similar number of iliac stents. Approximately 200 Angioplasties per annum performed with a further 100 diagnostic angiograms. For an individual committed to vascular radiology it would be possible to achieve 150 examinations within a 6-month period. Experience in CT angiography and MR angiography is also available.

Chest radiology.

A specialist attachment in chest radiology could be achieved taking advantage of large numbers of high-resolution CT chest examinations along with chest biopsy, attendance at clinical meetings and regional MDT. The Frenchay and Southmead respiratory teams have combined and are now based on the Southmead site.

Head and neck radiology.

For a specialist registrar with an interest in head and neck oncology an attachment with CT and MR of head and neck malignancy along with ultrasound of neck masses would lead to a thorough experience in head and neck oncology. This may be appropriate as a component of the training required within a neuro-radiology specialist training.

Gastro-intestinal radiology.

A specialist attachment in GI radiology could be achieved combining non-vascular intervention with conventional diagnostic radiology. Sessions of upper and lower GI contrast studies along with CT and MR combined together with GI intervention. This attachment would be ideal for an SPR who wishes to be a general radiologist with a sub specialty interest in GI radiology
