Year 4/5 Training Rotations Available at NBHT (Frenchay Hospital)

Musculoskeletal Radiology

There are two dedicated musculoskeletal radiology consultants who perform all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound and Interventional Techniques (including joint and spine investigative and therapeutic procedures). The radiologists work closely with clinicians from the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, sited at North Bristol - (Southmead site). There are close radiology links with the Accident and Emergency Service (one combined meeting per week). There are a further 3 Orthopaedic and Rheumatology combined meetings per week. Frenchay is a major Accident and Emergency Centre. It is the Regional Centre for Pelvic Trauma and the Regional Centre for Orthopaedic Spinal Procedures. A sub-specialty musculoskeletal attachment could be either entirely at Frenchay or combined to form a cross-site rotation at Southmead Hospital.

Abdominal Imaging

There are three Radiologists and one Consultant Radiographer with an interest in abdominal imaging who perform CT, MRI, Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy. This rotation would allow SpRs to be involved in all or any of the above techniques. There are opportunities for Biopsy, Drainage and Stent Placement Procedures. There are well established links with appropriate clinicians, and MDMs for Upper and Lower GI Malignancy, Clinical Radiological Meetings for Haematology and Gastroeneterology.

Chest Radiology

This rotation would take advantage of the high number of chest CT scans at this hospital and contribute to the Joint Radiology Meeting. Two radiologists specialise in chest imaging. This rotation would best combine either with a musculo skeletal or abdominal rotation i.e. three sessions of chest radiology, three sessions of other sub-specialty interest.

Neuroradiology

There are six consultant neuroradiologists within the Neurosciences Unit at Frenchay which is one of the busiest in the Country. All registrars will have spent three months in this Department in years 2. Further neuroradiology experience at Frenchay in year 4/5 may be possible, either in isolation, or combined with some other sub-specialty.

Registrars who wish to be a Specialist Consultant Neuroradiologist will need to complete a recognised year 5/6 training programme which is provided at Frenchay Hospital. This dedicated two year training programme is advertised Nationally.

General Radiology

A general rotation could be available with any of the elements any of the above, including Breast Imaging
