The Royal United Hospital (RUH), Bath (650 beds) is a large district general hospital on the north-west side of Bath, and provides the majority of acute care for a population of approximately 520,000 living in Avon, north-east Somerset and west Wiltshire.
Acute services are concentrated on the RUH site and most specialities are provided with the exception of neurosurgery, plastic and cardiothoracic surgery, and renal medicine.
The consultant staff at the RUH include 6 general surgeons, 2 of whom subspecialise in breast surgery, 2 vascular surgeons, 4 urologists, 3 ENT surgeons, 11 orthopaedic surgeons, 6 gynaecologists, 4 opthalmologists, 2 maxillo-facial surgeons, 5 paediatricians, 3 radiotherapists and 18 physicians who include 5 chest physicians, 5 gastroenterologists, 4 cardiologists, 3 haematologists, 3 endocrinologists, 2 neurologists, 1 medical oncologist, and 2 dermatologists.

Musculoskeletal Radiology
Two radiologists provide specialist musculoskeletal services with support from others in the Team. MR, Multislice CT and Ultrasound Facilities are available split between the RUH site and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath. Trainees are encouraged to develop diagnostic and interventional skills under consultant supervision. A weekly Rheumatology Meeting is held at the RNHRD aka the “Mineral Water Hospital”
Two dedicated consultants practice in a busy Symptomatic Multidisciplinary Breast Unit. A comprehensive Mammographic and Ultrasound Service is provided with Guided Biopsies and Mammatome Techniques. Experience in Breast Screening and in Breast MR Interpretation can be easily arranged if required.
The RCR Accredited Radionuclide Radiology Training is bases at the RUH Bath, and rotates to other hospitals on the Training Scheme. There are three Gamma Cameras in this busy department. Access to PET can be arranged.
There are two year 5 Radionuclide Radiology posts of one year duration.
Accreditation for a two year (yrs 5+6) training for two years( Nuclear Medicine) is being sought . This post would be advertised Nationally.
There is a year 5/6 (two year) Training Post in Vascular Interventional Radiology. This post will be advertised Nationally. Four radiologists have regular Interventional Sessions using a Phillips Interface 5000 Fluoroscopy Unit with Ultrasound. A wide range of advanced techniques are performed, namely Vascular Stents (including Aortic Stentographs) and Embolisation. Biliary and Enteric Stents are also performed. There are busy Vascular Access and Percutaneous Gastrostomy Services. Weekly meeting are held with Vascular, Surgical and GI teams.
For many years Bath has provided a very popular six-month rotation in General Radiology, which may also include elements of some of the above sub-specialties.
