One to One: Confidential Counselling Service
Why has this Counselling Service been developed?
The Severn Deanery is now providing a freely available independent short term counselling
service specifically for training grade doctors in the South West. This development is designed to offer independent support in addition to that provided by the NHS Trusts and the Clinical Tutors.
This is a service based on the success of similar schemes in other parts of the country. It has been
specifically set up for training grade doctors in NHS trusts in the Severn Deanery.
Who will provide this?
One to One is an independent, confidential and personal counselling service based in the South West, established in 1991. It provides an independent shortterm service, under contract, with a number of employers and is well respected and valued.

Who might consider using this service?
All training grade doctors in Severn Deanery about anything that is worrying them. This may include any of the following:
Work related issues:
_ Interpersonal skills
_ Communication skills
_ Issues around untoward incidents
_ Time management
_ Lack of assertiveness
_ Personal feelings of failure and/or uncertainties about future in medicine
_ Disciplinary issues
_ Bullying/Harassment
Personal issues:
_ Relationship difficulties
_ Illness (of self or family)
_ Bereavement
_ Family problems
_ General unhappiness, maybe for no apparent reason.
What is Counselling?
The aim of counselling is to help each person to clarify and address their difficulties and identify ways forward. Putting things into words is the first step in the process of identifying the range of possible options available to take control of life again
Is anyone’s permission required?
No. The only permission needed is that of the individual who accesses the service - no one will
know unless the individual concerned chooses to tell someone.
Confidentiality?
Confidentiality is vitally important. Counselling takes place in a safe environment, with clear boundaries where trust exists between the individual and counsellor.
What will it cost?
Nothing – this is a free service.
How does it work?
Ring the telephone number provided in complete confidence to arrange an appointment for an initial
session. Counsellors are available within 25 miles of each NHS Trust. You will be expected to travel to see the counsellor. The aim is to offer to meet within a week of the first contact and never more than three weeks.
Who are the counsellors?
All the counsellors are BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) Accredited or are UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) Registered. As a safeguard to you, only fully trained and experienced counsellors work with One to One.
