Severn School of Radiology

The Severn School of Radiology is based in the hospitals in and around Bristol. It is part of the Severn Deanery. The radiology training consists of a five-year full-time course of instruction in Clinical Radiology commencing August annually, which when successfully completed will lead to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

Specialist Registrar (STR) training is based in departments of Radiology which have been approved for training by the Royal College of Radiologists, in the participating hospitals within the Severn Deanery.

The Head of the School of Radiology is Dr Gavin Stoddart. For more information about training opportunities for Specialist Registrars in Bristol and the West Country please contact him Gavin Stoddart

There is an intake of up to 10 Specialist Registrars each year at ST1 level. Each year has its own planned training programme and job rotation, as described in the menu options on the left of the home page. These are designed to give the trainees the best possible training for their year of experience. The first three years are geared towards passing the three stages of the FRCR examination. The final two years give the trainees increasing experience and responsibility to hone their radiological skills, and to develop specific sub-speciality interests.

At all stages of their training there is a strong encouragement for trainees to participate in Audit, Teaching, poster presentations and Research. The scheme has an excellent record of our graduates finding a post-CCT fellowship or Consultant Post of their choice.

There are occasional vacancies for Specialist Registrars from other Schools of Radiology to apply for an inter-deanery transfer. Do please contact us if you wish to apply for an inter-deanery transfer to the Severn School of Radiology.  Details are given under the New Applicants option on the home menu.
